improvement Project for the Local Center of Aşağı Maraş (Kato Varosha) / Pertev Pasa District – Famagusta (Regeneration, revitalization, sustainable community development, placemaking, urban mobility)

This semester the students will be required to study in the local center of the Aşağı Maraş region, which is an area in a transformation from an area with merely rural in character towards one with urban characteristics. As stated by Richard Sennett, in The Uses of Disorder, an urban designer must work as surgeons or auto mechanics and repair the diverse broken parts of the city rather than trying to manufacture a completely new, self-sufficient, conflict-free urban machine. Thus, there might be a variety of different approaches to improving the local center of Aşağı Maraş, from among which the students will determine the most appropriate one. Accordingly, the main objective of the project is to develop conceptual and detailed design proposals for this part of Famagusta, which would serve the improvement and enhancement of the area. The project will be developed in several phases in accordance with the urban design process that all students are familiar with.
